MABS, GXI, and UTIBA support PR Bank in expanding its Mobile Phone Banking Services in Manila

PR Bank-MMT MPBS seminar

PR Bank has made the strategic decision to rollout Mobile Phone Banking Services (MPBS) in urban areas, and the expansion of the urban mobile commerce ecosystem, 15 prospective MPBS marketing agents completed a two-day training/workshop that oriented them to the basic features, procedures, and benefits of MPBS and GCASH – the electronic money platform facilitating the services.

The marketers were also given an overview of the products and services offered by Philippine Rural Banking Corporation (PR Bank) – a participating bank of the Microenterprise Access to Banking Services (MABS) Program and an accredited G-Xchange Inc. (GXI) partner bank offering the MABS-designed MPBS. They were taught MPBS transaction procedures, and selling and marketing techniques. Trainers from PR Bank, the MABS Program and GXI, the wholly owned mobile commerce subsidiary of Globe Telecom, conducted the training held at PR Bank’s Ortigas Center Branch on October 22 and 23, 2009.

The timing of their rollout in Manila also coincides with the Mobile Money Transfer Asia Pacific Conference (MMT APAC Conference), which will be held in Manila from December 7 to 10, 2009. The marketers will register businesses to accept GCASH as payment for goods and services and have the business owners open deposit accounts with PR Bank. They will be introduced and encouraged to use the bank’s mobile phone banking services, such as Text-A-Payment, Text-A-Remittance, Text-A-Deposit, Text-A-Withdrawal.  The MPBS marketers will be responsible for achieving the urban mobile commerce ecosystem expansion through widespread promotional activities and training of existing and potential bank clients who will sign up and become active MPBS users. They will be deployed to commercial centers within and near the Pasig City Branch of PR Bank. The urban mobile money ecosystem rollout is a joint initiative of the MABS Program, GXI, PR Bank, and mobile wallet developer Utiba, a technology firm based in Singapore that has completed ground breaking mobile money implementations including GCASH/Globe in the Philippines, Maxis Malaysia, True in Thailand and work with the Orascom Telecom.
On December 10, 2009, PR Bank will also host a visit for interested delegates of the MMT APAC Conference to share their experiences in utilizing the GCASH platform for microfinance services and expanded outreach to customers.  A visit will also be arranged to registered merchants in the Greenhills Area for interested participants to shop using their GCASH Wallets.
